LETTER FROM SENIOR EDITOR: MAJID AFAYEE
My earliest memories of my fondness for the martial arts was created in the mid to late 80s spending valuable time at my grandmother’s house (may she rest in peace.)
It was there that I got my fist taste of Kung Fu movies, Bruce Lee, and my all time favorite movie ‘The Last Dragon.’ She had the VHS version of it and as a young boy, I had such a fascination with it.
It was agreed once I got there I had to watch it at least once and it was magical. The main character Leroy, played by Taimak emulated Bruce Lee, it was like a match made in heaven. I had my first heroes in Bruce Lee, and Leroy. I would watch Bruce Lee and think he was some sort of super hero. His punches and kicks felt so powerful like it was coming right out me.

I was also fortunate that this was the time where martial arts was pop culture: Karate Kid, The Ninja, Bruce Lee, and the weekly doses of kung fu movies on television. I would look forward to Saturday afternoons and watch the 3 o’clock flick featuring some of the classic kung fu martial art films in our time. It was natural to just get into fighting stance and emulate what I have seen and realize it wasn’t as easy as shown.
As the 80s left new action stars were taking the scene: Jean Claude Van Damme, and Steven Seagal. I became a fan of their work and would watch any martial art movie that was out. Towards my teens I reconnected with those early kung fu movies through a great book by Ric Meyers: The Essential Guide to Hong Kong movies.I bought this at my local comic book store with all quarters.
It was that book that gave me a map of all the treasure I haven’t seen. I discovered the great earlier works of Jackie Chan: Drunken Master, Snake in the Eagle’s Shadow etc. And also many of the great Shaw Brothers classics: 5 Deadly Venoms, 36th Chamber of Shaolin. I remember renting 5 Deadly Venoms and literally was in awe of the story and it immediately whet my appetite for more of these films. I would save up my money and would collect these classics films. I would eventually build quite a library and began to learn more on their history and got familiar with the actors like: Gordon Lui, David Chang, Ti Lung, Lau Kar Leung, and many many others. The late 90s also introduced Jet Li and Fist of Legend and a whole new wave of Kung fu films that had a new twist to the genre.
What do I want this site to achieve? It was great to come across people in my life that had a love and affection to these films as I did. There are genuine fans out there who are so passionate so knowledgeable I want their voice heard. I want to take the best and represent it in a whole new way. I want to take the creativity and have a blast have fun and with all of your help and support create a online magazine that is entertaining, opinionated, and compassionate about the films and art that we all love. That is the goal of CATCHES BULLETS WITH HIS TEETH please stay tuned for more…..
